Let's Talk About the Miniature Schnauzer
If you've ever met a Miniature Schnauzer, you know they're convinced they're the biggest dog in the room. With their unmistakable beard, expressive eyebrows, and confident personality, these spirited little dogs pack a whole lot of charm into a compact package.
Originally bred as hardworking farm dogs to hunt rats and keep vermin under control, today's Miniature Schnauzers are loving family companions that want to be involved in everything you're doing. They're intelligent, loyal, entertaining, and full of personality. They may be small in size, but they carry themselves with the confidence of a much larger dog.
Breed Snapshot
Miniature Schnauzers typically stand 12 to 14 inches at the shoulder with a sturdy, nearly square build. Their distinctive beard, bushy eyebrows, and alert expression make them one of the easiest breeds to recognize.
Their coat is a double coat consisting of a wiry outer coat over a soft undercoat.
The traditional show coat is hand-stripped to maintain its crisp texture, although most family pets are clipped for easier maintenance.
The three colors recognized by the current AKC breed standard are:
- Salt & Pepper
- Black
- Black & Silver
You may also see white Miniature Schnauzers, and they can be AKC registered. However, white is not an accepted color under the current AKC breed standard for conformation showing.
You may also come across breeders advertising "rare" colors such as liver (chocolate), merle, parti, wheaten, or other unusual colors. Don't let the word rare fool you into thinking they're more desirable or valuable. Responsible breeders place their focus on health, temperament, and preserving the breed rather than producing fad colors.
While Miniature Schnauzers are considered a low-shedding breed, they are definitely not a low-maintenance breed.
Grooming Needs
If you're thinking about bringing home a Miniature Schnauzer, regular grooming should be part of the plan. That iconic beard and those expressive eyebrows don't stay looking great without routine care.
Most owners should expect to visit the groomer every
4 to 12 weeks, depending on how long they prefer to keep the coat and how much maintenance they're willing to do at home.
Many owners choose a shorter Schnauzer trim because it's easier to maintain, stays cleaner between appointments, and honestly, we think the Schnauzers appreciate it too.
Between grooming appointments, you should:
- Brush and comb several times each week.
- Keep the beard clean after meals and messy adventures.
- Check the ears regularly.
- Keep nails trimmed.
- Remove small tangles before they turn into mats.

Health Considerations
Miniature Schnauzers are generally a healthy, long-lived breed, but there is at least one health concern every owner should know about:
bladder stones.
This breed has a higher risk of developing urinary stones than many other breeds. Fortunately, there are steps owners can take to help reduce that risk before stones ever become a problem. Feeding an appropriate diet, encouraging plenty of fresh water, maintaining a healthy weight, and following your veterinarian's recommendations can all play an important role in supporting urinary health. If your veterinarian recommends a prescription urinary diet, it's important to stick with it.
Even with the best care, stones can still occur. Watch for frequent urination, straining, accidents in the house, blood in the urine, or signs of discomfort while urinating. If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule a veterinary appointment promptly.
Miniature Schnauzers are also predisposed to elevated blood fat levels (hyperlipidemia), which can increase the risk of pancreatitis. Feeding a quality diet, limiting fatty table scraps, maintaining a healthy weight, and following your veterinarian's recommendations can go a long way toward helping prevent problems. Responsible breeders should also perform recommended eye examinations and appropriate genetic testing.
